In need of a different dryer next year. I've searched about every past post on here and with out a doubt the Kansun sounds like a good affordable option. But here's my issue. I'm running an old Behlen 850 dryer now with electric and how many other problems. It's the weak link in the system. I found a 10-25-215 and being it Is so old I was looking at updating with new electric panel and such and also new electric drive and maybe an extra heating section or two. It has a newer floor and ss screens already. The guy is wanting $6900 delivered. I was quoted roughly $9000 worth of upgrades and that's not including any extra sections, labor or possibly a calc-u-dry. By the time I add all this is it cost pheasable yet? I'd like to have 700 to 1000 bu at 5 point capacity. Am I better off looking for a newer Meyer,FF,M-C or similar tower dryer? I have roughly a 65-70 ft leg feeding it. How many extra sections can you add to increase capacity? What do extra sections cost and if I add sections what do bigger motors cost and at what point do I need them?

Also looking at about 130000 bushel per year and usually start harvesting in the low 20s for moisture.

That or something similar is what I was wondering. What price range is something like that?

That's where I was getting some of my quotes. Sound like good people and I'm sure that they're not gouging me but ensuring me I will have a good product when I'm done. Question is do I put $15-20000 in an old Kansun or go to something newer. I'm not finding a lot of newer dryers to compare prices. I do realize the kansun will be like new when I'm done.

And I am in the early stages of pricing so I probably need to have a sit down with them and find out what I'm really getting.

We ran a rebuilt 10-25-215 for several years and it worked great. We added one section, VFD unload, SS screens inside and out with larger perforated holes...

It ran around 7-800bph at 5pts if I remember right, maybe a bit more. They are simple dryers but the fan motors are a special frame so you cant just grab on anywhere. I actually have a rebuilt one we kept for a spare still in my shop.

You will be closer to 100k give or take for a new one rated at 1000 bph i would guess.

Lodermeier's in Goodhue, MN also rebuilds and sells those KanSun dryers. They recently had I believe a 10-25-215 rebuilt and on display.

I compare the refurbishing of the old Kansuns kinda like the kinze repowers of the older 4 wd's. Popular for a while but losing favor. you are still dealing with a 40 year old dryer. Are they adding a moisture control system on them or still using the hyd drive? From factory they just went off grain temp. The kansun was a good idea back in its day, but its very limited in capacity compared to new dryers. Theres no magic to drying corn. the more corn you can hold, get up to 180 - 220 deg in an hour is what it will do. To keep dryer manufacturers honest, check the dryers 10 pt removal rate dumping hot. if its more than the total grain holding capacity, they are exaggerating. Most manufacturers are very close to that. Kansuns just dont hold much corn, so some compensate with lots of heat. Most people buy a dryer once in their life. I would say get a nice new one. There is EQIP grants out there now that pay for 1/4 - 1/3 of a new dryer with standard moisture control and cell and internet connectivity. I am assuming you are in central iowa and close to sukup. they make a good dryer, the factory and parts are close and they are reliable.

That's good to know about the grants and I agree a new one would be the best and nicest for a long term investment, but for some the rebuilt KanSuns are a good option. This is a tower dryer which is why it was and remains desirable. There is a good support network, at least in this region. I don't think you can look at an original KanSun and then consider the rebuilds on the same level. It's not like your taking an old tractor and restoring it to original condition and then going out to farm with it again like it's a new tractor. It's also not like the Kinze repower because those were usually putting more hp on a drivetrain not designed for it which set the stage for problems down the road. A KanSun tower dryer is very simple and upgradable to newer features. One of the first things to go is the hyd drive for a vfd. Extra sections for capacity can be added and typically are added to the buyer's request. There are other options as well. If you are going new, then I think looking at a screenless would be a very good idea.

Adding ss screens, a vfd unload tied into a moisture controller on the kansuns is very easy to do and can give significant savings over new.

We used a DMC Calcudry and it worked good.

Another reason these dryers can fit a nice niche is because they can be run on single phase power with static convertors built in.

I would caution the hope of a grant. We applied for one going from our Kansun to a new Neco and we did not get it. Same story with several neighbors i talked too about them. Several years before we did ours another neighbor got the grant going from a non kansun dryer.

These old Kansuns are still efficient dryers.

Do your homework before deciding how important that grant is to your project.

Thanks for the comments. I did find a Farm Fans and a Meyer the other day in that 800 to 1000 bushel capacity but I'm looking at $35-40000 range and one of them needed a new floor already. A New one even with a grant is probably more than the budget will allow. Just trying to maximize efficiency in tougher times here.

I'll offer a bit of a different take on a refurbished, modernized Kan-sun vs. those old tractors. If you have a big wet bin, enough electric service, and pour concrete with the right specs then you have something that in the future could very easily be doubled in capacity by moving in a new taller tower dryer in the same very minimal amount of real estate footprint. That's not going to be so easy with a horizontal dryer.

Good point. And I would like to think a rebuilt Kansun should have some decent residual value if I was to upgrade in the next 5-7 years.

two-twenty - 11/20/2016 19:03 Wet bin is a 14000 bushel harvestore.

You've got half the battle then, you can dry tons of corn with the little Kan-sun while you are cutting beans or rained out. And you have enough wet holding for a dryer capable of keeping up with two combines.
