Transfer news live as Mourinho 'wants duo', Branthwaite blow, Ten Hag boost (2024)

The transfer window has been open for nearly a week now and United are keen to get things moving.

The club have been linked with plenty of players over the last few weeks - as is customary for this time of year - and Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been speaking about United's plan for the window.

Their hopes of signing Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo appear to be over as both clubs involved in a potential deal are owned by INEOS.

The 24-year-old defender is one of several defenders linked with a summer move to Old Trafford while Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite remains a target after an initial bid worth up to £43m was rejected.

Elsewhere, United are being linked with a move for Lille's Jonathan David but will reportedly face competition from Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and West Ham United for the Canadian.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe on Man City charges

Sir Jim Ratcliffe 'understands' why Manchester City have brought legal action against the Premier League, as the Manchester United minority owner suggested the league have brought the issues upon themselves.

In a wide-ranging interview Ratcliffe appeared to offer support to City in their legal action, telling the Premier League it risks losing its status as the best division in the world if it continues to inhibit its member clubs.

"I can understand why they are challenging it," Ratcliffe told Bloomberg of City's legal action. "You can understand why they would say that they want an open market, [a] free market."

"If you start interfering too much, bringing too much regulation in, then you finish up with the Manchester City issue, you finish up with the Everton issue, you finish up with the Nottingham Forest issue - on and on and on.

Southgate responds to Ten Hag

After Ten Hag told Dutch TV that Shaw would not be available until the knockout stage at the earliest, Southgate responded refusing to put a timescale on his return.

The Three Lions' boss told reporters:

Luke’s an outstanding players that’s why we took the decision to bring him although he is not played for so long. We were hopeful that can be as soon as possible. We don’t want to put timeline on it but he is progressing well. Of course the balance he gives, the drives he gives, whoever plays with him down that side he gives a different outlet. At the moment we don’t have him and have to adapt.

Shaw suffers injury blow

Luke Shaw has suffered an injury blow ahead of England's clash with Denmark on Thursday evening.

The Three Lions' head coach Gareth Southgate has confirmed Shaw will not be featuring in the second group game in Frankfurt.

He told reporters:

Luke won’t be involved tomorrow, no. He’s actually on track to where we thought he’d be originally. We were hoping, a couple of days ago, we might accelerate that a little bit, but he needs a bit more volume work. He didn’t train with the rest of the group today, because there are days when he needs to do more than the rest of the group and there are days when he needs to recover when the others are pushing. He’s still in and out with the others but operating on his own programme as well.
