No worries if you don’t have a stand mixer. You can make homemade playdough in a large mixing bowl and use your hand mixer or just stir with a wooden spoon and knead by hand.

Easy Homemade PlayDough Recipe Instructions

But, first, you have to make your basic homemade play dough. It’s so easy! Simply add your dry ingredients (flour, salt, and cream of tartar) to your mixer bowl. Then, with the whisk or paddle attachment on your mixer, mix at slow speed until thoroughly combined.

Next, with the dough hook attachment on your mixer, mix at slow speed while drizzling the vegetable oil (or any oil, like coconut oil or canola oil) into the flour mixture. Continue mixing until thoroughly combined.

Finally, with the dough hook still on, mix at medium speed while carefully and slowly pouring the boiling water into the mixture. Allow it to mix until it forms a soft doughy consistency that pulls cleanly from the sides of the bowl. If the play dough mixture gets too sticky, just sprinkle in some more flour and mix more. Likewise, if your playdough is still too thick, add a bit more hot water and mix.

Now, Turn Your Plain Play Dough into Candy Cane Peppermint Playdough!

After you get your playdough the consistency you want, press an indent into it inside the bowl and add a few drops of peppermint extract into the indent. Then, with the dough hook still on, mix at medium speed until thoroughly combined.

Then, press an indent into the middle of the remaining playdough in the bowl and add some red food coloring inside it. With the dough hook still on, mix at medium speed until the playdough turns red. Add more food coloring and mix some more, if needed, for a deeper red playdough.
