Girls lacrosse Class B semis: Greeley to play Yorktown after comeback win over Fox Lane (2024)

BEDFORD —Games can sometimes change in a blink.

Or, as was demonstrated Monday night, in 18 seconds.

No. 2-seed Fox Lane went up 3-0 Monday on visiting No. 3 Horace Greeley Monday in their Section 1 Class B girls semifinal lacrosse game.

That score looked likely to stick going into the second period.

But with 19 seconds left in the first, Greeley scored and with one second left on the clock, scored again.

And, at that point, everything changed.

Bae Bounds scored early in the second period to knot things 3-3 and a few minutes later Rowan Edson put Greeley up 5-4.

The Quakers never looked back, extending their lead to 7-5 at the half and then to 8-5 early in the third quarter on another goal by Bounds, who'd put in half a dozen before the final horn sounded to reach 200 for her varsity career.

Greeley ultimately won 16-9 to earn the right to face No. 1 Yorktown Thursday at Lakeland High for the Section 1 Class B girls lacrosse championship.

"I think we came out jittery and nervous and the three goals just really added to it," Bounds said of her squad's rough start.

"We just needed a spark to get more fired up," jEdson added, explaining that came as those two goals put the Quakers, who, during the regular season, beat the Foxes 17-13, back in the game.

The Yorktown-Greeley meeting will also be the second-time match-up.

Greeley lost its season-opener 9-5 on April 2 to Yorktown, which struggled Monday with No. 5 Ursuline before pulling out a dramatic, last-minute, 11-10 win.

Greeley-Fox Lane numbers

One key to Greeley's win was its ability to win draws to gain ball control.

Bounds, who'll play for Brown next year, won five balls off the draw and had an assist.

Edson, a University of Colorado-bound junior, did a great job taking the draws for Greeley despite being just 5-1. She won three balls from herself off the draw, although it was her five goals that drew more fan apprecitiation.

Taylor Rice, who scored Greeley's first goal and had a big assist to Bounds for Greeley's first goal of the second half, finished with three goals and two assists.

But the junior Stonecipher, a Stony Brook commit, wasn't always denied. She had two goals and some key feeds to set up goals, including Fox Lane's first.

Team-high scoring honors for the Foxes went to Michaela Kaltsas, who had four scores. Included were two of the Foxes' first three.

Cora Moore, Riley New and Maddie Barrett each had solo scores.

Freshman goalie Sara Renz had 11 saves. Included were back-to-back stops midway through the fourth quarter -- one on a hard Bounds chance -- to at least temporarily keep the Foxes in the game.

Fox Lane finished its season 14-4.

Looking ahead at Yorktown

Bounds said Greeley figured Fox Lane would come out fired up and with a "chip on their shoulder" n light of previously losing to Greeley and also because, during the regular season, it had beaten Somers, a team that beat Greeley.

Greeley, which was up early by a few goals on Yorktown during their regular-season clash, wants to get out strong but hold on to the momentum this time, Bounds and Edson indicated.

And Edson and Bounds think their 12-6 squad has the right mindset after the semifinal win over the Foxes, plus a regular-season 9-8 loss to highly-regarded Class C finalist Rye.

"We're ready to win," said Bounds.

"We have our groove. No one can stop us now," Edson said.

Defending champ Yorktown survives

Of course, Yorktown could have different ideas.

While Greeley was starting to pull away, Yorktown was celebrating a final horn that meant survival and a chance to repeat as section champions and advance to state play.

Yorktown and Ursuline hadn't played this season and when they did, it was a classic "no-one-should-lose" game.

With Ursuline seemingly on the verge of an upset, freshman Annie Cunneen, who had a monster game, tied the score at 10 with a goal with 1:54 to play.

Brie Gaccino, a junior who's committed to play for Iona, then netted the game-winner with just 47 seconds left in regulation.

That was Gaccino's only goal but, needless to say, one of the biggest in a very big game.

But the game had plenty of big-game moments.

Yorktown goalie Maggie Appelle came up big multiple times, finisishing with 11 saves.

Annie Cunneen scored five times for the Huskers, secured four balls off the draw, as well as another ground ball, and forced one Ursuline turnover.

Also for Yorktown, Ava Ryan had a hat trick, an assist, three ground ball recoveries and one caused turnover.

Ava Cunneen scored twice and had two ground balls and won another ball off the draw.

Sofia Boucher had an assist and a ground ball.

The draw and caused turnovers were big for Yorktown.

Lily Diaz got nine draw balls and had a caused turnover.

Reileigh McEnroe and Siobhan Mulvihill both caused Ursuline to lose the ball twice and Reese Bruno and Caitlin Mulvihill both had one forced turnover.

For Ursuline, Zoe Ryan had a big game with four goals, six ballls won off the draw and one ground ball won.

Ryan's goals gave her 100 points for her varsity career.

Abby Dold had a pair of goals for the Koalas, along with one assist. She also won the race to get four balls off the draw.

Paige Moretti, who'll soon wear a West Point women's lacrosse uniform, ended her high school career strong with a goal, three assists, one ball won off the draw and one caused turnover.

Maeve Brutton and Teagan Hailihan both had a goal and Brutton also had two assists and a ground ball win.

Koala keeper Ella Bacallo had seven saves.

With the loss, Ursuline, which rebounded well from a poor end to the regular season, finished 2024 10-6.

Yorktown, now 14-4, will be looking for win No. 15 Thursday while Greeley seeks its 11th.

The game is scheduled to begin at Lakeland at 4 p.m. with the Class C final following its conclusion.
